Danielle Binder Q & A

Updated: Jan 13, 2023

I've learnt so much from everyone and all things involved in this epic life I’m living.

Danielle enjoying the crystal waters in San Andres Islands, Colombia.

Age: 27

Nationality: Australian

I started travelling on the bus from? 24 September 2017 - current.

Why are you travelling? Why not is the real question!

Hot or Not? What?

What are your talents? Eating, playing bus tunes and chilling.

How did you get on board? I got the Sister-Special-VIP-Ticket.

First impression of the Submarine With Wheels? Yellow, beaten up, but so much quirk!

Did it live up to its name? Oh yes.

What was the biggest challenge that surprised you about bus life? If it's not as cheap as you've had it, do not get it!

If you could relive an experience with the bus it would be? Being set up in Canoa, Ecuador. We had the tents out, hammocks under the shade from the palm trees, good surf, and good company. The only reason we left was the damn visa running out

Anything we should have/do MORE or LESS of? MORE surf spots literally parked on the beach. LESS breakdowns and less mosquitos.

In 10 years i will look back and remember: What a life!

Any advice for us? Adopting a mechanic/auto-electrician could be a good idea.

When we drive our wheels into Canada, what will you do? I'll give ya a big 'WOOHOO' and drink a beer to celebrate

Anything you want to tell us? Thank you to everyone who has been on the bus. Thank you to Noodle (Nadine) for having the bus. Thank you to the Yellow Submarine/plantain On Wheels. I've learnt so much from everyone and all things involved in this epic life I’m living.

How do we compare with travelling by public transportation and staying in hostels? We're waaaay slower than public transport (even pushbikes sometimes, haha), and hostels have the luxuries of showers and clean beds but we have the stories and something you'll remember.

So you had what it took and you survived. Would you recommend buslife to others? For sure!

Tell us how many different places you slept on the bus. I've slept in every bed, including the fold-out sofa and floor. Even outside (in the tent).

Since we don’t have a bathroom, where was your favourite bathroom location? The sea.

What did you sacrifice or gave up during your bus stay? Showers and personal space.

What did you contribute to bus life? Good times and great classic hits.

Best bus travel tip? The less the better!

What was your favourite bus meal/drink? This is a hard one cos there were so many good ones! After coffee (of course), fish tacos and lentil paddies are up there!

What food/recipe did you learn to cook with us? A lot of the basics. Flatbread, pasta, rice.

Your favourite feature of the bus? Our adopted plant babies. Glen and Ash.

Let's talk about bus breakdowns. Tell us in detail about one experience. Oh god, there's been so many. We were broken down on the side of the highway in Peru; we flagged down a group of guys and just like that, one of the guys started the motor with a metal fork. Impressive.

How was it fixed, and what you thought at the time? A fork! Only in South America.
